George Thomas “Tom” Hueston

December 02, 1949 – January 30, 2026

George Thomas “Tom” Hueston, age 76, of Mapleton, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 30, 2026.

He was born December 2, 1949, in Mapleton, Kansas, to Kenneth and Marie Hueston.

He is survived by his wife, Shelva Jean “Jeanie” Hueston; his son, Kenny (Katie) Hueston; and his granddaughter, Macie Jean Hueston. He is also survived by two nephews, Jerry Anderson and Brian Antrim; his sister-in-law, Sue Barney; and his brothers-in-law, Billy and Jeff Hill, and their families. In addition, he had some very special neighbor kids whom he spoiled as his own.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann and Guy Antrim; and his nephew, Michael Antrim.

Tom attended Fulton High School and graduated from Uniontown High School in 1967. After high school, he attended Wichita Automotive School before proudly serving in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973 as a boiler technician aboard the USS Brinkley Bass.

Following his military service, Tom spent his working years as a diesel mechanic, including many years at B&D Motors from 1974 until its closure, as well as work at several other mechanic shops. It was during this time that he formed many lifelong friendships that became an extension of his family. He later retired from Ward Kraft.

Tom loved the outdoors—hunting, fishing, deer camps, and gathering with friends to swap stories. He was quick and witty, always ready with a dry, off-the-cuff response that could leave people laughing at the drop of a hat. That sharp humor was part of what made him such a magnet to those around him. While he could seem gruff at first, those who truly knew him understood he had a big, soft heart. He held a special place for kids, especially those eager to go hunting or fishing, and he enjoyed sharing those moments with his hunting buddies, both young and old.

Tom will be remembered for his stories, his humor, and the quiet ways he showed he cared.

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 4th, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mapleton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Uniontown Eagles Shooting Sports and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Main St., Fort Scott, KS 66701. Words of remembrance may be submitted online at cheneywitt.com.
