Esther Stanbrough, age 93, formerly of Mound City, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the Horton House, Fort Scott.
She was born August 21, 1930, in Prescott, Kansas, the daughter of Chesley and Esther Mathews. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse before her marriage to Lloyd Stanbrough on May 29, 1949. Esther served as postmaster in Mound City for many years. She was a member of the Mound City United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd, granddaughter Micaela Murray, her brothers Allan, Joe, Harold, Thurman and Richard Mathews, and sisters Virginia Wilson and Flossie Amick.
Survivors include: one son, Mark (Wendy) Stanbrough of Emporia; two daughters, Marla (Terry) Koester of Fort Scott, and Karen (Kirby) Murray of Pleasanton; eight grandchildren; Tara (Jeff) Allen, Kristen (Drew) Williams, Bethany (Caleb) Tegtmeier, Leslie Stanbrough, Jenna (Justin) Hill, Taylor (Dayton) Murray, Shelby (Kiel Brannan) Murray, and Emily (Tyrone) Davis; twelve
great- grandchildren; and one brother, Neal (Virginia) Mathews.
She was dearly loved by her family and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Funeral Home & Crematory, Mound City Chapel. Services will be held Friday, February 16, at 10:00 a.m. at the Mound City United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery, Mound City.
