Bob “Bobby” J. Reed, 92 and a resident of Fort Scott, passed away peacefully at the Freeman Fort Scott Hospital, in the early hours on Thursday, July 15, 2026. He was born April 22, 1934, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the son of Clarence L. Reed and Georgia I. (Lowry) Reed. He married Nena Maureen Moore-Baker on January 8, 1955, in Escondido, California, and she preceded him in death on January 18, 2009.
Bobby lived a good, long life, as he would often say. He loved to travel and see new places as well as old favorites. He and Nena went on many road trips over the years, taking their kids, their kids’ friends, their grandchildren, and anyone else that wanted to go. He loved baseball and was very good at it and had wonderful memories and stories of games and players.
Bobby was blessed by the Lord, and easily learned many trades and skills over the years, and never had trouble finding work, or a good project. At various points in his life he worked as a ranch hand, a youth pastor, teacher, fruit-picker, mechanic, carpenter, and all-around handyman. He had a love for cars and had many stories of his favorites that he owned as well as those he got rid of as soon as he was able. He knew the big names in drag racing in his day, and they knew him. He eventually became a Certified Cadillac Technician and Master Craftsman, applying his skills until retiring and moving back to Fort Scott. He then became a manager for Airport Security in Kansas City for several years, before retiring again. Then, because he liked to be busy, Bob was seen at funerals and visitations, working for Konantz Cheney Funeral Home for several years.
Bobby was a good husband and father, and always had time to play catch, fish, or attend tea parties. Cleaning wounds and applying bandages on his children and grandchildren he left to Nena, however, as it upset him to see them hurt or sick. He loved his children and grandchildren, and had a big extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews, and loved get-togethers with them.
Bobby is survived by his daughter, Dara Jackson and husband Bob, of Fort Scott, his grandchildren, Emily Reed Zuniga, of Radcliff, Kentucky; Jordan Michael Heiland, of Seattle, Washington; Tucker Reed Jackson, of Meredith, New Hampshire; Sullivan Thomas Jackson and fiancée Lily Schwartz, of Fort Scott; and his great-grandchildren, Maylina Faith and Donovan Reed Zuniga, of Radcliff, Kentucky. He has numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews that he loved, including Debbie Robinson of Fort Scott, Daryl and Beth Graham, also of Fort Scott. He is also survived by his good friends, Gene Lybarger, and Gary McGee. In addition to his wife Nena, Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Robin Alan Reed, and all of his siblings, brother Junior Reed, sisters Marie Hinds, Betty Reed, and Joanne Snyder.
Following cremation, as were his wishes, he didn’t want any funeral services or visitations. Instead, he would rather that his friends and family gather together wherever they are and share memories and stories.
